By examining the specific case of fatwas on the Pakistani state issued by two extremely prominent Pakistani Deobandi jami\xC2\x91as, Jami\xC2\x91a Dar al-\xC2\x91Ulum Haqqaniyya and Jami\xC2\x91a Ashrafiyya, this paper elucidates why fatwas must be examined in a manner that accounts not just for their specific textual content, but also the realties that color the outlook of muftis. Moreover, the paper argues for the adoption of a holistic approach that examines the entire practice of fatwa issuance instead of solely the end result of this practice, i.e., the text of the fatwa itself. My paper demonstrates that the merits of this approach include a drastic widening of the scope in which a particular fatwa can be understood and interpreted." valueRef: 4310.0.2279146 - !ruby/object:Etapper::API::DefinedValue dataType: 0 displayType: 3 fieldName: Paper Title fieldRef: 4310.0.3907 value: "Practice versus Text: Revamping the Traditional Content-centered Approach to Fatwa Analysis" valueRef: 4310.0.2279148 - !ruby/object:Etapper::API::DefinedValue dataType: 0 displayType: 0 fieldName: Role fieldRef: 4310.0.3915 value: Presenter valueRef: 4310.0.2279149 - !ruby/object:Etapper::API::DefinedValue dataType: 0 displayType: 2 fieldName: Program Unit fieldRef: 4310.0.4192 value: Study of Islam Section valueRef: 4310.0.4327 - !ruby/object:Etapper::API::DefinedValue dataType: 1 displayType: 0 fieldName: Tenure Begin fieldRef: 4310.0.3917 value: 1/1/2008 valueRef: 4310.0.2279147 final: false lastModifiedDate: method: Participation note: "" ref: 4310.0.2276675 subject: 2008 Annual Meeting Participation type: 2 pages: 1 start: 0 total: 2 usedCache: false
