      Search engines make their money by delivering relevant content to their users.  Think about SEO as telling a search engine that your site is worth displaying.

The more sites that link to yours, the more important a search engine will think your site is.  That said, don't participate in link exchanges with unfamiliar websites: search engines can detect link exchanges and may penalize your site for participation.
        %li Be wary of companies offering to get your site "to the top of Google."  No legitimate business will make that claim, and their shady tactics could adversely affect your ranking.
